Eagle River / Dryden Area Black Bear Hunting

Ontario is the top Black Bear hunting destination in the world. It's estimated that there are approximately 167,000 adult Black Bears in Ontario and their total population counting spring cubs could be as high at 200,000. This is a considerable difference compared to the 1987 estimation of 100,000 bears. Many people have come up with different politically motivated theories about why the population is increasing but if you look at the big picture, the population of all carnivorous species in Ontario has being rising since the fall of the fur trade. Now that beaver populations have exploded, so has the bear population and the bears are growing up to be bigger and stronger with this traditional supply of beaver meat being available again. It's also causing problems. Big strong male bears are very territorial and will chase other bears out of their territory. As a result, some younger bears are starving and heading into towns. This is why hunters need to target the big trophy male Black Bears.

The northwest side of Eagle Lake is in the heart of the highest concentration of Black Bears in Ontario. The MNR estimates at least 1.6 bears per square mile. Fin & Feather Resort has been given a prime 90 square mile Bear Management Area (BMA) right in the middle of this dense population. The high population of bears combined with professional baiting techniques and a limited number and hunters per year has given our bear hunting guests an extremely high success rate. We have set a limit of 16 hunters per season that get to hunt our BMA each fall.

The average size fall Black Bear in our BMA is approximately 250 pounds but bears over 400 pounds have been harvested by our guests. Occasionally rare color variations are available like Cinnamon Black Bears or Chocolate Black Bears. Baited stands are usually 1 mile apart and most are easy to get to. Some of our baits are very remote and take more time to get to while others are very easy to get to and perfect for anyone with physical challenges. You are welcome to bring your ATV.

We start our bear hunt around August 15th and it runs through to September 30th. You will need to prepare for any kind of weather. It could be hot one day and cold the next. We also ask that hunters bring their own tree stands due to insurance reasons. Don't forget to bring your fishing gear for great late Summer and early Fall fishing. The best bear hunting is in the morning and evening so the middle of the day is prime time to get into some fantastic Walleye, Muskie, Pike and bass action.
